‘On budget and on time’ continues to be the theme with construction of the city’s new community and recreation centre project on Lakeshore Drive.

“Beams are going up,” says Max Mantha, Chief Operating Officer of EllisDon, the project’s Design-Builder. “Our goal is to have it enclosed for the winter to ensure that we’re able to work right through the winter no matter what the weather conditions are.”

Mantha was on hand Thursday for a beam signing ceremony.

The event brought together city officials, project partners, and user groups to celebrate progress on the $63 million facility.

“It will help with tourism,” says Mayor Peter Chirico. “It will help attract people to our community. People when they’re moving to a community, they look to see what amenities are available and this will be one more tool that we have in our bucket.”

The centre will feature side-by-side twin ice pads, a community space, a walking track and more.

“[It’s] state of the art and net zero, one of the first in Canada,” says Chirico. “I can’t wait to see this happen.”

The facility is slated to open in August 2026.
