The North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) Foundation is receiving an RBC Community Spaces Grants this year.
A total of $12.5 million is going to 41 organizations across the country to advance environmental sustainability and accessibility in buildings and spaces.
The hospital foundation’s grant is earmarked for accessibility and will fund high-impact capital projects and improvements.
“Unique to our hospital is Mînowacihewin – Regional Service for Indigenous People (Mino),” says Tammy Morison, NBRHC Foundation President and CEO. “The Mino team provides culturally relevant support to Indigenous peoples through a holistic and balanced approach to health and wellness. In consultation with Mino, NBRHC is undertaking a project to enhance the accessibility of Mishkikiwan, our existing ceremonial space. Currently, the space is not accessible for wheelchair, stretcher, or bed-bound patients, limiting its use.”
Morison says by resurfacing and relandscaping Mishkikiwan, they will create a more accessible and welcoming environment for Indigenous patients and the broader community.
“This improvement will facilitate better use of the space, ensuring all patients can participate in important cultural and spiritual services, fostering a more inclusive and supportive healthcare experience,” she says. “We are deeply grateful to the RBC Foundation for their support of this impactful project through a Community Spaces Grant.”
Further details will be announced at the end of July.
Since launching in April 2024, the RBC grant program has committed $37.4 million to 120 projects across Canada.
Officials say the fund has provided support for retrofits, repairs or upgrades to existing public community buildings, as well as construction of new public spaces.
