Event connects northern medical learners with health-care recruiters

Physician recruitment in the north was the focus of an event bringing medical learners and health-care recruiters together on Friday.

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine University event was all about promoting career opportunities for physicians and training opportunities for medical learners.

Recruiters from more than 20 communities across Northern Ontario were there, from Mattawa to Timmins, Kenora and more.

“Building relationships between learners, clinicians in practice, and local communities is fundamental to addressing the unique health challenges and evolving needs of Northern Ontario,” says Dr. Sarah Newbery, Associate Dean, Physician Workforce Strategy at NOSM University. “Northern Ontario is an incredible place to live, learn, and build a career. Our goal is to connect learners with communities where they can have fulfilling experiences—whether that’s a learning opportunity, locum work, or a long-term career.”

Officials say recruiters have been requesting a Northern Ontario-based forum to connect with NOSM University learners.

NOSM says studies, including a long-term study at the northern medical school, show that medical learners are most likely to stay where they have trained.

Friday’s event was held in Thunder Bay.
