Canada Post workers sharing their ideas on ways to enhance their service

Canada Post could be the site some Canadians go to, to do their banking.

You may also be able to charge up your electric vehicle at a Canada Post station.

These are both ideas the Canadian Union of Postal Workers have drummed up in the hopes of keeping the company sustainable. A review by the Government of Canada is currently underway to examine that issue.

On a local level Keith Bradford of Local 576 says they want residents to be on their side, and they have an event planned for Saturday. Bradford says they will be going door to door to tell North Bay residents want kind of services they can provide.

He says that includes the option of postal banking, especially in communities that no longer have banks.

Bradford says another green idea is to set up electrical car service stations. He says this is already being done in Norway and they could implement the same technology at their postal stations across the country.

On Monday night, at City Council, Councillor George Maroosis put forward a motion to support door to door service and other avenues Canada Post wants to explore.

Maroosis says it’s a no-brainer to support door to door service and any other endeavours. He says this is a vital service, especially for our community that includes many seniors and several rural areas.

Maroosis says they need to be a profitable company and they need to be relevant and that’s shown through the increased option of online mail delivery.

He says if North Bay can stand behind Canada Post that could have a significant impact on the government’s final decision.

The motion from council was unanimously passed.
