Humane Society gives tips on preventing dog bites

Stressed dogs can lead to dog bites, and there are signs to tell when your dog is stressed.

Executive Director of the local Humane Society Daryl Vaillancourt says the most obvious one is when the hair on a dogs shoulder is standing straight up. He says that’s when a dog is serious about where they stand in the situation and they aren’t very happy.

As well if the tail is between the dogs legs or their backs are curved, those also indicate they are feeling stressed.

The Humane Society says over 500,000 dog bites happen every year in this country. An owner in Canada will also be held responsible for any injuries their pet causes to people or other animals.

Vaillancourt says owners usually know how their pet is feeling, but it’s when your around a strange pet when accidents can happen. He adds you should always check with an owner before approaching a dog you aren’t familiar with.
