Battalion edge out a 2-1 shootout victory against Sudbury

The North Bay Battalion scored  a 2-1 victory Tuesday night over the Sudbury Wolves, their first of the preseason, after Brett McKenzie and Cam Dineen scored in a five-round shootout.

Adam McMaster scored in the second period for North Bay, which received 37 saves through 60 minutes from overage goaltender Brent Moran, making his Battalion debut after an offseason trade from the Flint Firebirds.

Ryan Valentini replied in the middle period for Sudbury. Goaltender MacKenzie Savard faced 15 shots, just two in the final frame.

The teams went straight to a shootout after regulation time, skipping an overtime period as per OHL protocol in the preseason. The victory avenged a 3-2 Wolves win Sunday at Sudbury in the exhibition opener for both clubs.

McMaster, the Battalion’s first-round choice in the OHL Priority Selection in April, scored his second goal of the preseason with the teams skating four-on-four at 4:14 of the second period.

Daniel Walker nearly gave the Battalion a two to nothing lead, but promptly rang the puck off the right post behind Savard later in the frame.

Ryan Valentini tied the game up at 14:11. The Wolves pressed for a majority of the third period, out-shooting North Bay 14 to 2.

The Battalion are back in action when they host the Owen Sound Attack at 2:00pm Saturday before finishing the preseason schedule with a visit to Owen Sound at 2:00 pm Sunday.
