The Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team has already set program bests in countless categories this season, but there’s one more they’d like to scratch off the bucket list tomorrow. The Lakers travel to Guelph to take on the Gryphons in the McCaw Cup at 2:00pm. With a win they can continue making history, with an OUA title and a trip to the USports National Championship but that’s easier said than done.
They’ll have to beat the first place and defending champion Gryphons, who the Lakers split the season series against in the regular season. Both teams won on their home ice. Nipissing claimed a 1-0 victory. The McCaw Cup final is a battle of the top two seeds in the OUA. The teams combined to go 37-7-4 in the regular season.
This is Guelph’s third straight trip to the OUA championship game, losing in 2014-15 and winning last season. Nipissing’s debut in the finals will come in just their fourth season. In their first year, the Lakers missed the playoffs. In their second, they qualified, but lost in Round 1. In their third season, they made it to triple overtime of Game 3 in the second round.
