The Powassan Voodoos have acquired goaltender Shayne Battler from the Fort Erie Meteors of the GOJHL. The 6’3”, 200-pound goaltender had a 3.40 goals against average to go along with a .904 save percentage in 33 regular season games with the Junior ‘B’ club last year.
Battler is a former 6th round pick of the OHL’s Sarnia Sting. Voodoos Associate GM Mike Mackley says Battler is a big bodied goaltender who moves very well and utilizes his size to his advantage. He added that Battler shows a maturity and poise between the pipes that allows him to thrive in a tough environment.
The big southpaw netminder believes he can fill the void left by the recent departure of last year’s starter and NOJHL MVP Nate McDonald, who left in a trade with Whitby of the OJHL earlier this week. Battler says he’s looking forward to the challenge of stepping into the role of starter, and having a very successful season with the Voodoos. He’s expected to meet his new teammates on July 8th and 9th, when the team hosts a Prospects Camp in Barrie.
