After early intrasquad game, Troops head south

Andy Baker, former Powassan Voodoos forward, and last year’s NOJHL-leading scorer flashed his scoring touch during the third of three intrasquad games at North Bay Battalion training camp.

An early Thursday morning matchup of the split-squad Green-White game saw Baker tally two second-period goals in leading his White squad to a 5-2 decision over the Green team. Patrick Brown, Alex Robert and Ryland Mosley also scored for team White. First-round pick Brandon Coe and Nick Davis replied for Green.

The Battalion are now carrying 27 players and 24 will travel to Buffalo, N.Y. with the team for the OHL Showcase.

The forwards on the preseason roster include centres Brett McKenzie, Adam McMaster, Kyle Potts, Luke Burghardt, Rhys Forhan and Kurtis Evans, left wingers Daniil Vertiy, Jacob Ball, Daniel Walker, Brad Chenier and Luke Moncada and right wingers Justin Brazeau, Andy Baker, Alex Robert, Brandon Coe and Patrick Brown.

The OHL newcomers among the forwards are Coe, the Battalion’s the third overall choice, in the OHL Priority Selection in April, Evans and Brown. Burghardt and Moncada were acquired from the Guelph Storm in a trade June 27.

The defencemen include six veterans in Riley Bruce, Jesse Saban, Adam Thilander, Cam Dineen, Brady Lyle and Eric Allair. Newcomers are Simon Rose, Travis Mailhot and Payton Vescio.

Brown, Mailhot and Vescio have signed standard player’s agreements including education packages with the club.

The club has decided to carry only Julian Sime and Mat Woroniuk as goaltenders on the current roster.

Thilander, who’s with the Swedish national junior team, is expected to arrive in North Bay on Sunday, while Bruce and Ball still are recovering from injuries suffered last season and will not play in the OHL Showcase.
