Update: Deceased identified in Front Street fire’s aftermath

North Bay Police Service confirms the death and releases the name of Leonard Cote, the resident pulled from a burning home on Front Street Wednesday evening.

Fire Chief Jason Whiteley says firefighters quickly found Cote in the living room of the second floor home and got to work on him.   Whiteley says he had no vital signs when he was pulled from the home and EMS applied resuscitation measures before transporting him to hospital.  However, the 89-year-old man died of his injuries in hospital.

Investigators say an improperly mounted smoke alarm affected the alarm’s efficiency.   Whiteley says the Fire Marshall’s Office is looking into the cause and he’s pegged damage at $250,000.

Whiteley also says a passerby alerted a tenant on the first floor of the building about the fire when he saw smoke coming from the home around 9:00pm Wednesday.   It was right after the passerby acted that the fire department was called.

The police say no foul play is suspected with regards to the blaze.
