Couple with ties to North Bay found dead in Nova Scotia

A man and woman who attended school and still have family in the North Bay area have been identified as the deceased in a suspicious fire in Springhill, Nova Scotia.

When firefighters arrived at the house fire on Tuesday, the house was not burned badly but the two bodies appeared to have been involved in a case of murder-suicide, according to one city official.

Doug Williams, a city councillor and former police officer in Springhill tells the Halifax Chronicle Herald that the fire did not appear to have been the cause of death.

Records show that Jennifer Semenec, 45, of North Bay is the owner of record of the property in Nova Scotia. Semenec’s family members have acknowledged that she and her boyfriend, Marc Poulin, 42, are the two found in the home that they had been renovating in Springhill.

Semenec’s sister, Jessica Ridley, tells the Chronicle Herald that she believes the deaths are related to Poulin’s struggles with PTSD. Poulin is a former member of the Canadian military.

An RCMP Major Crimes Unit will continue the investigation alongside the RCMP Forensic Identification Section, the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s Service and the Office of the Fire Marshall.
