Survey says…winter is still here

The latest snow survey, taken yesterday by the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority, confirms that winter is still here and snow depth and water equivalence have increased since the snow pack measurements taken April 3.

As part of its flood forecasting program, NBMCA is now measuring the snow pack weekly, to monitor conditions as we get closer to the spring freshet.

A major winter storm is forecasted to bring up to 50 mm of precipitation to the watershed over the next five days, the majority of which is expected to fall as snow. Its impact will be measured when the next snow survey takes place April 16.

Joel Harrison, Water Resources Scientist at NBMCA says the April precipitation has increased both snow depth and water content in the watershed. He adds that the snow pack still contains a “significant amount of water.”

Snow is measured for depth and water equivalence in North Bay, Corbeil, and Chisholm Township. The average snow depth for the three sites was 39.8 centimetres on April 10, an increase of 6.5 centimetres from last week. The average water equivalence for the three sites was 119 millimetres, an increase of 27 millimetres from last week.

Data for the season can be found here.
