North Bay-area man defrauded of $9,000

North Bay OPP are looking into a case where an East Mills man south of the city has been defrauded of $9,000.

The fraud involves the man buying numerous iTune gift cards with money he withdrew from his bank account.

Investigators say the man was called telling him to remove his money from the bank because his account had been compromised.

The con artists said an investigation was underway and in the meantime the man could keep his money safe by buying iTune gift cards.

He was also told once the investigation was complete, he’d get his money back by returning the cards.

The scammers kept calling the man every 10 to 15 minutes checking his progress on buying the cards.

The victim also gave the security numbers of the cards to the perpetrators.

It wasn’t until one of the cashiers at the shop where he was buying more cards told him he could be the victim of a fraud that the man contacted the Powassan OPP.

Police are telling the public a bank won’t call its customers to tell them their account is compromised and that they should pull their money out.
