Highway 17 collision involving moose claims man’s life

One man is dead following a single motor vehicle crash involving two moose, says North Bay OPP.

At approximately 10:15pm last night, officers from the North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to the fatal single motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 in Bonfield Township.

The police investigation has revealed that the westbound passenger car collided with two moose.

The deceased has been identified as 36-year-old Denis O’Neil, of Ottawa, Ontario.

Highway 17 was closed, from Highway 94 to Highway 531, until approximately 2:30am, while OPP Technical Collision Investigators conducted their investigation.

The OPP had issued warnings this spring about moose and other wildlife on Highway 17 to the east and west of North Bay and again today, following a busy night for interactions with wildlife on area highways.

Police say between 9:00pm last night and 2:00am this morning, officers from the North Bay Detachment of the OPP responded to five motor vehicle collisions involving moose and deer, including the above fatal collision. These collisions were not concentrated in one area. Five moose were involved and one deer.

Acting Staff Sergeant Terry Forshew, Detachment Commander of the North Bay OPP, would like to remind motorists, “…Animals are very active at this time of the year. Please use caution while driving especially at dusk and dawn.”
