Local cancer society announces long-time service awards

The North Bay chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society recognized 37 residents Thursday for years of volunteer service ranging from five years to 50 years.

Florence Kirkham was the recipient of a 50-year service award while Nancy Bowness was given a 40-year service award.

Two people, Susan James and Shelley Miller, were given 20-year honours while Debbie Doucette and Norah Murphy were recognized for 15 years of volunteerism.

Seven people were given 10-year service awards.

They were Nancy Adams, Blair Clements, Timothy Hyland, Marion Johnson, Danielle Robillard, Kevin Thompson and Robert Tuck

The remaining awards involved five years of service and 24 people were on the receiving end there.

They are Leeanne Annett, Michelle Badgley, Jennifer Beam, Bertrand Bizier, Patti Carr, Pamela Despres, Robert Farrington, Georgette Fournier, Katelyn Haddow, Pierre Heroux, Heath Marson, Paul Martin, Sandy Martin, Harry McMartin, Emily Moir, Kent Moir, Mary-Beth Moir, Brody Pharand, Owen Pharand, Helen Reckmann, Jeffery Ryan, Cathy Seguin, Leah Stock, Gerri VanAmelsfoort.

Lisa Dupuis is a recipient of a courage award for fighting and beating cancer.

Lisa Dupuis, a cancer survivor was given a courage award.

In May 2017, Dupuis was diagnosed with rectal cancer and a combination of radiation, chemotherapy and surgery got rid of all the cancer.

Fourteen lymph nodes were also removed and they were all negative.

She says even though the rectal cancer was treatable, she said learning she had the disease still came as a shock.

The second Community Award was given to Modern College of Hairstyling and Esthetics which cleans the wigs cancer patients wear during treatment at no charge to the local chapter.
