NDP releases platform for Northern Ontario

Rob Boulet, the NDP candidate for the Nipissing-Timiskaming in the upcoming federal election has announced the party’s priorities for the north.

The plan is based on five priorities:

  • Putting reconciliation at the heart of our work
  • Making life more affordable for Northern Ontario families
  • A plan for jobs and growth
  • Protecting Northern Ontario’s environment and fighting the climate crisis
  • Strong public services Northern Ontario families can rely on

“The people of Northern Ontario are consistently left behind after decades of Liberal and Conservative neglect. Northern Indigenous communities are being treated horrendously, life is becoming less and less affordable, and we’re battling extreme weather conditions caused by climate change,” Boulet said. “It’s time to make different choices and put the people of Northern Ontario before the profits of big corporations.”

Mark King, the candidate for the People’s Party of Canada said that while the party doesn’t necessarily have a policy for the north, but has full support from the party leader, Maxime Bernier to speak about regional issues without recourse from the party.

Some issues that King wanted to work on in the north include:

  • Supports the creation of a two for one expansion for Highway 11 North between North Bay and New Liskeard
  • Federal support for the return of passenger rail service between Timmins and Toronto in conjunction with the provincial government

Green Party candidate Alexander Gomm says there will be an announcement coming from the local party next week.

“I’m meeting with various stakeholders this week to find out what their concerns for the community are,” Gomm explained. “We will be releasing our vision of the District of Nipissing-Timiskaming at our meeting at the Raven and Republic on October 8th.”

The other two candidates, Jordy Carr of the Progressive Conservatives and Anthony Rota of the Liberals, did not reply to us before publication.

The federal election takes place on October 21.
