Conservation Authority issues Water Safety Statement

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) is cautioning the public on growing risks near and around area watercourses.

This Water Safety statement was prompted because of the above-average snow levels, the warming temperature, and rain that is in the forecast for the area.

“The anticipated 15mm of rainfall combined with a melting snowpack with water content that is 1500 per cent of normal for this time of year, will increase runoff to area lakes and watercourses,” said Kurtis Romanchuk, NBMCA Duty Officer. “The water is cold and streambanks will be slippery so they could pose a safety hazard.”

NBMCA is encouraging parents to keep children and pets away from the waterways and waterbodies.

Romanchuk adds that water levels on watercourses with NBMCA’s jurisdiction are generally within average ranges for this time of year, with the exception of Lake Nipissing which remains above its seasonable average. Flooding is not anticipated however water is likely to accumulate on roadways, parking lots and flat or low-lying areas.

Rain is expected today, with the temperature to be at four degrees Celsius. Trace precipitation is expected over the following few days with the highs set to dip back down below zero.

NBMCA says the warning is in effect or will be updated before Friday at 4:00pm. Staff at the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority will continue to monitor weather and watershed conditions and provide updates if conditions change.
