NBACF releases second round of emergency relief grants

The second round of grants through the North Bay and Area Community Foundation’s (NBACF) COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund has been announced.

This round will see two area food banks, the Mattawa Food Bank and West Nipissing Food Bank, each receive $2,000. Officials with the NBACF say the organizations were chosen as they are currently working with an increased need.

“This grant of $2,000 will be applied directly as our cupboards are thin at the moment of canned non-perishable goods,” explained Wayne Reid, the president of the Mattawa Food Bank. “The impact is immediate as we prepare for another distribution day soon, for without sufficient cans we cannot pack a hamper which would seriously impact us. We expect an increase in clients anywhere from 25-50 per cent in a town where we already service close to 20 per cent of the population.”

The first round of grants saw $5,000 go to the Gathering Place, and $2,500 to the North Bay Food Bank. Officials say through the first two rounds of grants, NBACF has made an impact of $11,500 in the community and will continue to distribute the grants where the need is most pressing in the area.
