SIU says no wrongdoing of crews in early October drowning

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is reporting they have finished their investigation into an early October drowning on Lake Nipissing in North Bay.

SIU officials say the incident began with a single-vehicle collision near the Jet and Tenth Avenue intersection. North Bay Fire and Emergency Services, along with the North Bay Police Service were called to the scene of the collision. Crews were told the driver of the vehicle had left the area and was headed towards the lake.

Officials say they saw the man in the lake about 100 metres from the shore and tried to get him to return to the shoreline. Shortly after, they lost sight of the man, whose body was recovered the next day by an OPP underwater search and recovery team.

Joseph Martino, the director of SIU, says the end of the investigation determined that the officers went above and beyond what was required in the line of duty to save the man’s life, and as such, there are no reasonable grounds to proceed with criminal charges.
