Provincial funding helping keep area kids healthy and active

Two area after-school program providers are receiving provincial funding.

A total of $171,750 has been announced by Vic Fedeli, MPP for Nipissing.

Just under $100,000 goes to the YMCA Northeastern Ontario (North Bay and District) while the City of North Bay receives $72,000.

“The experience of the past two years has highlighted the importance of sport and recreation programs to individual and community well-being,” says Fedeli. “These programs are at the heart of Nipissing’s community and our government is committed to working with our partners, educators and community leaders to support opportunities for children, youth and families to be active and healthy.”

Helen Francis, President and CEO of YMCA Northeastern Ontario, says they’re grateful for the Ontario After School Program Funding.

“Our after-school programs have always been well attended in North Bay and we know that children, parents and families need these supports to provide safe spaces, recreation and access to caring role models, for those hours when school is out, but parents remain at work,” Francis says.

Mayor Al McDonald is also thanking the province for its ongoing support.

“With this funding, the City of North Bay can continue to provide youth in our community access to safe and supportive recreation programming in their time outside of school,” he says.

The local funding is part of an overall investment of $13.5 million across the province, providing opportunities for children and youth to be active and healthy.
