$250,000 grant supporting new pet adoption and wellness centre

A financial boost for the North Bay and District Humane Society’s new pet adoption and wellness centre.

Pet Valu Canada presented a cheque for $250,000 to the humane society on Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Adam Woodward, Vice President of Franchise Operations for Pet Valu says the Companions for Change grant is supporting the construction and development of the new centre.

“Why North Bay? It’s a very important one, they’re very organized here.  They’re the gateway from the north to the south as far as adoption of animals,” he says. “We’ve had some great opportunities to work with this team down in southern Ontario before and we’re very happy to help them expand their operations here.”

Liam Cullen, Executive Director of the humane society says work continues on the 3,200-square-foot facility on Main Street West.

“Earlier this week, to see that first wall go up, I immediately ran out and took photos and shared them with people,” he says. “It’s really starting to look like it’s becoming a reality.  Right now we’re on track for a May 2023 opening.”

He also says they’re very thankful for the grant from Pet Valu.

“When we originally started the project we anticipated that it would be a $1.1 million project,” he says. “As the pandemic continued and costs started to go up with inflation and everything, it quickly became a $2-2.3 million project so we really knew that we needed a boost from some of our partners to make our dream become a reality.”

The centre will include 12 dog kennels, 5 cat and kitten care rooms, a training space, laundry facilities, a meet and greet space for potential adopters and an exercise park for pets and volunteers.
