Marking 70 years of working with the USAF in North Bay

The United States Air Force (USAF) has had a presence in North Bay for 70 years.

A proclamation marking the occasion was presented to members of the USAF on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 22 Wing CFB North Bay.

“This year marks 70 years of teamwork between two nations with a common goal, the defence of North America,” says  Colonel Richard Jolette, Commander 22 Wing and Canadian Air Defence Sector. “ We are privileged to host our United States Air Force contingent and families, both at work in the surveillance and control of North American aerospace, and as members of our community.”

Col. Jolette says Canada remains the only country in the world with a bi-national agreement with the United States.

“I am honoured to continue the strong tradition of United States Air Force presence in the great city of North Bay, a home-away-from-home for many of us,” says Lieutenant Colonel Juliana Bruns (United States Air Force), Commander, Detachment 2, First Air Force and Deputy Commander Canadian Air Defence Sector.  “For 70 years we have learned from each other working shoulder-to-shoulder with our Canadian partners to defend North America against all threats, keeping a steady watch.”

Mayor Al McDonald says North Bay would not be the city it is today without the long-standing commitment of the United States Air Force and 22 Wing CFB North Bay.

“Today is a great day to thank each and every serving military member for their commitment to the defence of North America, for their contributions to the city of North Bay, and for their sacrifices,” McDonald says.

Over the past 70 years, the United States Air Force has provided instructor pilots, complimented the CIM-10 BOMARC surface-to-air missile squadrons and provided forces for the air defence of North American under the bi-national NORAD agreement signed on May 12, 1958.
