Crime Severity Index down again in North Bay

For the third straight year, North Bay’s Crime Severity Index (CSI) has dropped.

The North Bay Police Service is welcoming the improvement with the CSI at 103.9 last year.

That’s down from 112.5 the year before and from 113 in 2020.

The police service says the change coincides with extensive recruitment efforts, adding more than a dozen constable positions this year and last, along with investments in support services like the body-worn camera program, and more.

Officials also continue to work collaboratively with our community partners to ensure at-risk individuals receive the supports they need, diverting many people away from the justice system and preventing crimes from occurring in the first place.

“I am encouraged to see the improvement to North Bay’s Crime Severity Index ranking for 2022,” says Scott Tod, Chief of Police. “North Bay’s 2022 CSI figures show that the work of our members at the North Bay Police Service is making a difference. We still face challenges in our community, but we are moving in the right direction.”

The police service also says last year’s figures give North Bay one of the lowest rankings when looking at the major centres in Northern Ontario.
· Greater Sudbury (82.8)
· North Bay (103.9)
· Thunder Bay (108.9)
· Sault Ste. Marie (117.4)
· Timmins (148.5)

North Bay is also bucking the national trend with police-reported crime in Canada, as measured by the Crime Severity Index (CSI), up 4% in 2022.

Statistics Canada also says the Violent CSI rose in 2022, reaching its highest point since  2007.
