Design-builder selected for new community and recreation centre project

The next step in seeing a new community and recreation centre built in North Bay has been approved by council.

Mississauga’s EllisDon Corporation has been awarded a $2.6 million project development services contract.

“This initial phase of the progressive design build process is aimed at achieving early alignment on cost, schedule and functional program paving the way for council to select a preferred design concept,” says Councillor Lana Mitchell, chair of Infrastructure and Operations.

She adds there’s more work to do, and further approvals required, after that.

“The process will then involve further refinement including generating cost estimates with value-engineering options prior to a public meeting to gather feedback to be used to help us inform the actual form, size, character and design details of the project as we move forward.” Mitchell says.

She says negotiations for a guaranteed maximum price, which council has already set at nearly $60 million, will then take place along with completing design documents.

Mitchell says that will all come back to council for approval, adding the target for completing construction is the end of December 2025.

During Tuesday’s meeting, some councillors lauded the work EllisDon has done on arena projects in Sault Ste Marie, Wasaga Beach and Madison Square Gardens in New York City.

The new twin-ice pad facility will be located at the Steve Omischl Sports Field Complex on Lakeshore Drive.
