Local convenience store targetted

The investigation continues after a local Mac’s was robbed on Saturday. Police say the Clarence Street convenience store lost a small quantity of cash after the robber entered and demanded money. The suspect was wearing a dark outfit in order to conceal his/her identity. No weapon was seen.

Students to be honoured

Today, students who are active in the community will be honoured. North Bay’s Rotary Club will be recognizing a senior student from each secondary school in the city for their community involvement. The award is also meant to ensure youth are aware of the benefits of volunteerism.

A first-of-its-kind leadership meeting

This Thursday, St. Joseph Scollard Hall will host a special leadership meeting. All student council presidents from local secondary schools were invited to take part in the inaugural Nipissing-District Presidential Leadership Conference. The theme will be “understanding the different structures of student government organizations.”

Groups say keep LHIN

A provincial government Standing Committee has heard northerners want to keep the NorthEast Local Health Integration Network as is. The committee was in Sudbury and heard from 29 northerners from five area communities. The committee heard not only do groups want to keep the LHIN, they want it to build. Joel Johnson, who’s involved in mental health in North Bay, told the committee he wants the LHIN to stay the course. And Janets Fathers, an RN on Manitoulin, says the LHIN makes a difference in the lives of its clients.

New Democrats fight for ACR subsidy reinstatement

Two Northern Ontario New Democrats are delivering a one-two punch over a federal decision to cancel a subsidy to Algoma Central Railway. Carol Hughes of Algoma Manitoulin Kapuskasing says the service is being axed at a time when our low Loonie can attract many Americans north. Meanwhile Algoma Manitoulin MPP Mike Mantha wants the provincial government to work with the feds on finding a solution to save the service. Mantha says northerners are fighting the selloff of the ONTC and now with the ACR line in jeopardy, the bad news keeps piling up for the north. The feds are killing ACR’s subsidy for passenger rail service between Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst.

NDP: Liberals don’t understand Northern highway concerns

The NDP’s transportation critic says Transportation Minister Glen Murray doesn’t get it when it comes to Northern Ontario highways. Gilles Bisson, the MPP for Timmins-James Bay, was responding to comments made by Murray on the north’s highways. Bisson says highways are a life and death matter for many Ontarians. But he says the best Murray could say to the CBC is the Liberals will review contracts and there might be changes in some areas.

Sturgeon teen charged in sex case

A 17-year-old Sturgeon Falls boy faces sexual related charges. Police say the accused had sexual contact with an underage girl. The teen is charged with three counts of sexual assault, two counts of sexual interference and one count of invitation to sexual touching.

The Hampton Inn in North Bay has been named one of Canada’s top 25 hotels for families. The ranking is the result of online reviews by travelers through Tripadvisor ratings. Tripadvisor is the world’s largest travel site and lists more than 125 million reviews and opinions by travelers. Reviews include where to stay, eat and play.

Missing Methadone

A large quantity of Methadone has gone missing from a downtown residence. North Bay Police say that a total of five bottles are gone. If taken incorrectly, that’s enough to kill someone. They are asking for help in locating the drugs and to note that signs of overdose include shallow breathing, clammy pale skin and unconsciousness.

Fishing derby on Lake Nosbonsing

There’s going to be a fishing derby as a part of the east ferris winter carnival. Tomorrow is the Doug and Karen Ball annual derby is taking place on Lake Nosbonsing. Registration starts at 9:30 and it’s $20 per hole.

A well known North Bay man has died. Tom Graham passed away yesterday afternoon at the age of 64. He was a former city councillor and very involved in the sports community. Few details have been released about the cause of death

Sudbury man convicted of arson in major Espanola fire

A Sudbury man has been found guilty in connection with a major fire in Espanola two years ago. A jury convicted Craig Hunda of arson causing property damage. The jury also found Hunda guilty of aggravated assault but not guilty of arson for disregard of human life. The 31-year-old has been on trial the last several weeks in Sudbury. He’s been behind bars following a March 2012 fire which caused $1.8 million damage to two downtown buildings in Espanola. Hunda will be sentenced at a later time. Meanwhile the owner of the Espanola buildings faces arson charges in the same case but no date has been set for his trial.

Harsh winter could kill many deer says fish and game club chief

This winter’s deep snow depth plus the extreme cold is bad news for deer. And the president of the Espanola Fish and Game Club says we could see a high death rate in deer this year. Lee Morley says some deer are starving because they can’t move around their winter feeding yards. Morley says in severe cases female deer will abort their fawn which will further reduce the population. Espanola residents are doing their part to help save the deer later this month with a strategy meeting. One option being discussed is to bring feed to the deer.

Mattawa man fined after illegal deer kill

A deer hunter is looking at a $2,000 after illegally killing a deer near North Bay in East Ferris. Richard Murray of Mattawa killed a deer with a crossbow but he did it on the front lawn of someone’s home without permission. The court was told there was also no consideration for people or property in the course of Murray carrying out his kill. Murray also lost his deer hunting license and has to complete a safety course before he can re-apply for hunting-related activities.

Sturgeon Falls man hit with overfishing fine

A Sturgeon Falls man has been fined $1,050 for overfishing on Lake Nipissing. A Conservation Officer from the Ministry of Natural Resources came upon the angler who produced the legal quote of two walleye. However the CO’s detector dog sniffed out 12 walleye fillets hidden in a compartment on the man’s snowmobile. In addition to the fine, Richard Mayotte also forfeited the extra fish to the Crown.
