Significant increase in medication collected for disposal

The 6th annual Medication Drug Drop-off Day took place Tuesday and the total weight collected more than doubled the 2017 output.

The day is an opportunity to spread awareness about disposing of unused medication but the public is reminded that this can be done at their local pharmacy any day of the year.

The event is a partnership between the North Drug Strategy, The Stay on Your Feet Nipissing Parry Sound Coalition, the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit, and with support from the North Bay Police Service and Shoppers Drug Mart on Cassells Street.

In a four hour period, 37 people visited the booth to drop off unused or expired prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins and herbal supplements safe disposal. Thirty-six visitors and obtained a medication bag with information as well as a pill container.

During the four hour period:

  • 61.2 pounds of medications were collected (28.4 pounds more than 2017)
  • 8 pounds of medication cardboard or packaging (2017 packaging and bottles were counted together for a total of 15.4 pounds)
  • 25.8 pounds of medication bottles in 2018
  • 1 pound in syringes in 2018
