Invasive plants show up in North Bay area

Five species of invasive plants have shown up in the North Bay region.

The plants were found in the Laurier Woods Conservation Area, the Kinsmen Trail and Chippewa Creek Eco Path.

The five are Japanese knotweed, Himalayan balsam, Purple loosestrife, Bush honeysuckle and Phragmites.

The Stewardship Youth Rangers from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry found the plants, identified and mapped them.

Invasive plants aren’t as much of a problem in Northern Ontario as they are in the south.

And the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority and MNRF want to keep it like that.

The goal is to identify invasive plants and get rid of them ASAP before they have a chance to spread.
