SIU now investigating Sunday evening shooting in Sturgeon Falls

The danger involving a shooting Sunday night in Sturgeon Falls is over.

However, very little information is being released and it’s not likely much more will come in the short term.

That’s because the Special Investigations Unit has been contacted.

The agency only gets involved in cases where someone has either died or been injured as a result of police involvement.

The mandate of the SIU is to maintain confidence in Ontario’s police services by assuring the public that police actions resulting in serious injury, death, or allegations of sexual assault are subjected to rigorous, independent investigations.    Incidents which fall within this mandate must be reported to the SIU by the police service involved and/or may be reported by the complainant or any other person.

At this time all West Nipissing Police Chief Ray St. Pierre is saying is there are no public safety concerns.

St. Pierre says under the SIU mandate all media inquiries must now go through the SIU.

There’s no word on who would have died or been injured for the SIU to become involved.

Last night just after 8:00pm the West Nipissing Police got the call about a shooting that involved two people.

With help from the OPP, they began searching the Leblanc Road and Drive-In Road area.

OPP also closed Highway 17 in both directions while they searched for a 46-year-old man.

The Trans-Canada Highway has since re-opened and residents displaced by the shooting have been allowed to return home.

There’s been no statement from the police on the status of any victims or the 46-year-old but their investigation continues.
