City councillor elected to the board of directors of two lobby groups

Mac Bain has been elected to the AMO Board of Directors and as an officer of FONOM’s Board.

One announcement came from the recent Annual Conference of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), held in Ottawa August 19 – 22. North Bay City Councillor Bain will help set policy for the association and serve as a key municipal leader in the province as a member of the Northern Caucus.

“AMO benefits from membership from across the province, and a board that reflects the diversity of Ontario’s municipal governments. To that end, I am pleased to have Mac on the 2018-20 board team,” said AMO President, Jamie McGarvey.

AMO is billed as a non-profit organization representing almost all of Ontario’s 444 municipal governments. AMO supports strong and effective municipal government in Ontario and promotes the value of municipal government as a vital and essential component of Ontario and Canada’s political system.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) is thanking Mayor Al Spacek of Kapuskasing for his many years of leadership and dedication as president of FONOM. Mayor Spacek announced at the FONOM Conference this spring that he would not be seeking re-election in October.

An election of Officers was held at the August board meeting in Ottawa. The new officers are President Danny Whalen (Councillor from the City of Temiskaming Shores), 1st Vice President Bain and 2nd Vice President Paul Schoppmann (Mayor from the Municipality of St. Charles).

FONOM is touted as an association of some 110 districts/municipalities/cities/towns in Northeastern Ontario mandated to work for the betterment of municipal government in Northern Ontario and to strive for improved legislation respecting local government in the north. It is a membership-based association that draws its members from northeastern Ontario and is governed by an 11 member board.

Bain is one of 26 candidates for North Bay City Council in the October 22 municipal election. If he is unsuccessful in his bid for re-election, he would be replaced on these boards.
