‘Change’ means more women, new faces elected to city council

Half of the 10 people elected to North Bay City Council in 2014 will not be part of the 2018 edition.

Four first-time councillors in Johanne Brousseau (who garnered the second most votes in the council race), Bill Vrebosch, Scott Robertson and Marcus Tignanelli were elected. Dave Mendicino, who did not make the top ten in 2014 was returned to council by the voters, as well.

Incumbents re-elected include Tanya Vrebosch in the deputy mayor’s seat, Mike Anthony, Chris Mayne, Mark King and Mac Bain.

George Maroosis, Derek Shogren and Jeff Serran were the incumbents who lost re-election bids. Current Deputy Mayor Sheldon Forgette finished third in the race for mayor, and Daryl Vaillancourt did not run.

Thanks to Tanya Vrebosch’s surge to the top of the council table and Brousseau emergence as a force on the municipal scene, the number of women serving on council has doubled in 2018.

When asked about her approach to her new position, Brousseau said she hoped the voters’ confidence had more to do “with who I am than what I am.” She added she is ready “to do a good job for all of North Bay.”

Despite all the talk of change, incumbent Mark King did not share this viewpoint. “I’m not so sure there is change here. I think what we’ll watch is more of the same.” With a slight drop in the council standings from four years ago, King will no longer chair the community services committee.
