Will film productions take a snow day from North Bay?

Officials from the City say no film permits have been withdrawn due to its fake snow ban.

There have been concerns voiced that the City’s stance could lead to productions being moved. Many of the projects filmed in North Bay are Christmas movies, many by Hallmark. The film industry has been steadily growing, bringing in much-needed revenue streams to North Bay.

After much social media discussion and the creation of a petition by the Film Enthusiasts of North Bay, the City of North Bay has clarified its stance on the use of PHOS-CHEK as a fake snow prop for film productions:

The Corporation of the City of North Bay appreciates the response to a recent decision to suspend the use of PHOS-CHEK, which was based on available toxicological and ecological information. This specific product has been used by film and television productions to simulate snow, which can be done by other products and methods.

The decision to suspend the use of PHOS-CHEK was made after careful review and investigation of potential impacts. The City strives to balance the priorities for economic development and environmental protection as is outlined in the City’s Strategic Plan.

No film permits have been withdrawn as a result of this decision, nor has there been any indication from the industry that this decision could impact planned projects. Our team will continue to meet with film and television companies during the production planning phase.

The City of North Bay has worked closely with the industry to grow its presence in North Bay. Recognizing the importance of the growing film and television industry in our community, City staff will continue the high level of service and support for film and television activity in the community.

Over the past two years, there has been exponential growth both financially and in the duration of the stays within the City of North Bay and area by film productions. From 2016 to 2017, filming days doubled from 127 to 268, with direct spending rising to $22.7 million in 2017 from $8.9 million in 2016.

In 2017, North Bay and area welcomed 11 film and television productions to the area and the momentum has continued this year as the number from 2017 has already been surpassed.
