Joint task force running down leads in fugitive search

While the discovery of a damaged boat shifted the focus in the national search for two fugitives back to the Nelson River near Gillam, Manitoba, law enforcement continues to field tips from the public closer to home.

In Ontario, despite a large number of reported sightings of wanted duo Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky, provincial police say there is no confirmation that they are even in Ontario. The pair of teenagers are wanted in three murders in northern British Columbia.

Staff Sergeant Carolle Dionne at OPP headquarters in Orillia said a team has been set up specifically to follow all tips.

“Our criminal investigation branch is connected with the RCMP and we’re working along with them to coordinate our efforts here in Ontario of any findings that result,” Dionne reported.

While no tips have panned out so far, Dionne notes it has never been confirmed that the fugitives are not in Ontario.

“It’s important for members of the public to be vigilant of their personal safety at all time,” she advised. “We are reminding them that these two suspects are considered dangerous. If observed, not to approach them and to call immediately.”

Dionne reminds the public not to go to social media first as that only wastes valuable time.
