AIDS Awareness Week runs next week

November 24th marks the beginning of AIDS Awareness Week (AAW) in North Bay.

The week, which runs until December 1, will feature main events, including a free Point of Care HIV Testing Drive on Wednesday, November 27 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the AIDS Committee of North Bay and Area (ACNBA).

World AIDS Day takes place on December 1, but North Bay will be hosting theirs at the White Water Gallery on Friday, November 29. Doors will open at 10:00 am with a reception with apple cider, and baked goods. The festivities run from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm.

World AIDS Day is the international day of awareness and a tribute to millions of people who have died from AIDS-related illnesses according to the ACNBA. This year’s theme is “communities make the difference.” The event will include Mayor Al McDonald reading the official World AIDS Day proclamation for North Bay which will be followed by a short vigil and several brief presentations. Anthony Rota, MP will also be present to say a few words.

Afterward, red scarves that have been knitted and crocheted by volunteers of the ACNBA will be tied around street posts in the city’s downtown area. The ACNBA says the scarves, bearing HIV/AIDS awareness information will be left for anyone to take.
