Structure fire caused by cooking oil

Friday evening saw North Bay Fire and Emergency Services respond to a structure fire on McIntyre East.

The building was a four-unit apartment building, which fire crews worked quickly to put out. A tenant attempted to extinguish the flames with an extinguisher but was unsuccessful according to the crews.

Three people went to the hospital as a result of the fire, one of which was a nine-day-old baby. Crews say all three were treated for some smoke inhalation and released shortly thereafter.

“The cause of the fire was another example of careless cooking practices,” said Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders. “The tenant was cooking with oil and left the hot oil unattended.  The oil reached its ignition temperature and burst into flames.  The apartment suffered significant damage as a result of the fire.”

“Thankfully the building was equipped with working smoke alarms which alerted the residents of the danger,” Saunders continued. “Near North Victim Services is working with the tenants to provide them with their required necessities.”
