A 39-year-old North Bay man is facing 28 charges after police temporarily evacuated a Ferris neighbourhood and closed down a part of Passmore Ave.
Last Friday morning police acted on information they received about the accused being in possession of weapons, breaching a Prohibition Order.
In the process of arresting the man, officers became aware and concerned that there were potential drugs, and explosive materials in the home and the OPP’s specialty units were asked to help.
The residence was examined over the weekend.
As a result of the search warrant police seized from the residence;
- A 410 gauge shotgun reported stolen
(supplied by NBPS) - Multiple parts of firearms including receivers, barrels and stocks
- Shotgun shells
- Bear spray
- 84.8 grams of suspected Crystal Methamphetamine
- 11 suspected Carfentanyl pills
- 43 suspected Fentanyl pills
- 32 suspected morphine pills
- 1 gram of suspected cocaine
- 6 bottles of suspected methadone;
- 716 grams of suspected marihuana
- $2080 of Canadian currency.
- A license plate reported stolen
- A compressed air nail gun
Police also identified evidence at the scene that was consistent with someone attempting to make an explosive device.
As a result the 39-year-old has been charged with:
- One Count of Possession of a Weapon Obtained by Commission of Offence;
- Four Counts of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm;
- Four Counts of Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm;
- Eight Counts of Breach of Prohibition Order;
- One Count of Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose;
- Six Counts of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking in a Schedule I Substance;
- One Count of Production of a Substance;
- Two counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000; and
- One Count of Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime
The estimated street value of the drugs seized is $116,000.
The investigation is on-going.
The North Bay Police Service thanks the OPP for their efforts over the weekend, saying their assistance “ensured the residence was cleared safely”.
They also thank various EMS from the city as well as the local residents who showed no hesitation as their routines were interrupted and accommodations had to be secured to resolve this investigation safely.
“Nobody gave us a hard time,” said Community Safety Coordinator John Schultz. “It’s not easy to tell people to evacuate and to close down a street. But public safety is our #1 job. It’s all about the preservation of life. That’s why the OPP units were called upon, and that’s why we did what we did. The cooperation level was awesome and that made our job that much easier.”
