North Bay and Area Community Foundation to take part in new Healthy Communities Initiative

Nearly $700,000 in funding is now available for Northern Ontario to transform public spaces.

North Bay and Area Community Foundation (NBACF) announced today that it, alongside other community foundations, will work in the north to provide  $693,150 to transform public spaces in response to COVID-19.

That money comes from the Federal Government’s $31 million Healthy Communities Initiative.

Kate Merrit-Dupelle, Executive Director at NBCAF, says she’s excited to see what kind of projects will be applying for the grant.

“This pool of funding is regional, and across Northern Ontario and that’s really exciting. We’re looking forward to working alongside Community Foundations of Canada and the Canadian Urban Institute, as well as other partners to help make these projects happen,” she said.

The money will support community-led organizations in developing local, small scale infrastructure projects such as designing and programming community food garden to provide residents with healthier food options, creating winter facilities that increase comfort and accessibility for vulnerable users as well as establishing free wifi technology training for women experiencing increased domestic violence so they can access more support.

“As a community foundation, we typically give to a qualified donee. A registered charity for example. But because of this funding model, non-for-profits and municipalities can also apply. The possibilities are endless we’re really looking forward to what that kind of collaboration brings,” finished Merrit-Dupelle.

The application period for the first round of funding closes on March 9, 2021, at 5:00 PM PST. A second application period for funding will take place starting in May 2021.
