Canada celebrates first National Ribbon Skirt Day

Today marks Canada’s first National Ribbon Skirt Day.

The day was inspired by a 10-year-old member of the Cote First Nation in Saskatchewan who wore a ribbon skirt to school in 2020.

The skirt is worn by Indigenous women to formal events but a member of the school staff told her it wasn’t formal enough.

The school apologized but it sparked an online movement of Indigenous women wearing their skirts as a show of pride in their identity.

A Manitoba Senator then tabled a bill to recognize every January 4th as National Ribbon Skirt Day.  That bill passed last year.
