Soldier On Initiative happening this weekend

The North Bay Golf & Country Club, Osprey Links and Pinewood are all supporting the Soldier On initiative this weekend.

The Soldier On program supports sailors, soldiers and aviators to overcome their physical or mental health injury or illness through golf. If you’re planning on hitting the links, you’ll be asked to make a donation.

Honourary Colonel Tom Hedican helped create the Canadian version of Patriot Day Golf back in 2013.

Hedican says the initiative is so important to him because he’s seen firsthand the repercussions soldiers deal with when they come back from duty.  Hedican mentioned a recent example of a soldier dealing with PTSD who with Soldier On’s help, received a kayak and was able to get back on his feet.

Honorary Colonel George Burton says the goal for the fundraiser is for each honorary colonel to raise $1,000. Burton says this is a great way to get out on the course and help others at the same time.

Burton added this weekend was chosen because it coincides with the same program happening south of the border, as well as the Labour Day weekend being the unofficial last weekend of summer.
