North Bay OPP advising drivers of bus safety tips

The North Bay Ontario Provincial Police Detachment is reminding drivers that some students will be heading back to school next Tuesday.

The OPP want people to remember school bus safety tips, considering they will be highly visible on the roads come Tuesday.

If you’re following a school bus, Ontario law requires vehicles to stop 20 meters behind the bus. Should you meet a school bus in oncoming traffic, your vehicle must stop at a safe distance to let students cross well ahead of the bus bumper.

It’s important to stay stopped until the school bus stop arm has folded in again, and the overhead red lights have stopped flashing. Drivers who break this law could face stiff financial penalties, fines between $400 and $2,000, and a loss of 6 demerit points.
