Post-secondary funding increase welcomed by Nipissing

Nipissing University is welcoming a provincial boost in funding for the post-secondary sector, with an additional $6.4 billion over four years.

Officials with the local university say they’re especially encouraged by $284 million in dedicated funding for small, regional, and Northern institutions.

They say it recognizes the essential role universities like Nipissing play in supporting students, strengthening communities, and training the highly skilled graduates needed across the province.

“The funding for small, regional, and Northern institutions acknowledges the unique realities we face and reinforces the province’s commitment to ensuring students have access to excellent, affordable, and in‑demand university programs no matter where they live,” says Dr. Kevin Wamsley, President and Vice-Chancellor, Nipissing University. “We appreciate the government’s recognition of the critical contributions Northern universities make to community vitality and to the future workforce of Ontario.”

Colleges and universities will also be allowed to raise tuition by up to 2% per year for three years, then up to 2% or the three-year average rate of inflation, whichever is less, in the years following.

Nipissing says it will continue to do its part to drive efficiencies, minimize costs, and ensure funding is used responsibly as it works to advance its Strategic Plan, Academic Plan, and Operational Plan.
