Longtime city councillor Mac Bain, who was also the Executive Director of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM), has passed away.
Condolences are coming in from numerous people and organizations across the province.
FONOM says it’s deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Bain, saying he was a dedicated leader who played a key role in advancing priorities, strengthened relationships with government representatives and advocated for policies and initiatives.
“Mac was the heart of FONOM in so many ways,” says President Dave Plourde. “He was someone who always saw the glass as half full. No matter how difficult the situation, Mac had a way of remaining positive, putting people at ease, and reminding us that we could get through anything together. His optimism was contagious, and his steady reassurance often gave us the confidence to say, ‘We’ve got this.’ His sudden passing is a profound loss to FONOM and to all those who had the privilege of working alongside him.”
FONOM says beyond his professional accomplishments, Bain was a devoted husband, a loving father, a valued friend and a trusted colleague.
Visitation will take place this Sunday afternoon from 12 pm to 3 pm, at Martyn Funeral Home.
“Mac knew municipal government inside and out and had a real love for North Bay,” says Mayor Peter Chirico, in a statement from the city. “He had a great sense of humour and knew how to carry himself as a politician, treating people with respect and always keeping things in perspective.”
Chirico say he knew Bain for many years, adding they first served together on Council when we were both newly elected.
“I always valued his knowledge and advice and appreciated his good nature and the way he looked out for our community. He will be missed,” says Chirico.
After 23 years on Council, Bain recently announced he wasn’t seeking re-election. In September, he also announced a personal battle after being diagnosed with leukemia.
The North Bay Police Service, Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association, Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), and many others, are mourning his loss.
“Through his leadership at FONOM and his work with AMO, Mac was a solid voice for municipal interests and the communities they serve,” says Riley Brockington, AMO President. “He will be remembered for his dedication to public service and his lasting contributions to municipal government in Ontario.”
