Getting a snapshot of area homelessness

A 24-hour homelessness count is being done this week in our area.

The District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board and the Nipissing District Housing and Homelessness Partnership are conducting the Point-in-Time (PiT) count from Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 8 a.m. through Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7:59 a.m.

Nipissing Counts 2026 provides an estimate of the number of people experiencing homelessness, including both sheltered and unsheltered individuals, within a defined area at a specific point in time.

The 2026 PiT Count will include:
– A count of those experiencing sheltered homelessness, based on information collected from shelters, transitional housing programs, and public institutions;
– A count of those experiencing unsheltered homelessness, gathered directly by outreach workers, social service sector staff, and volunteers.

Last year’s count found 452 individuals experiencing homelessness across the district.

DNSSAB says since that time, additional homelessness supports have been added locally.

That includes the opening of 24 new transitional housing units at Northern Pines Phase 3 and expanded shelter facilities that continue to provide 24/7 supports at the site.

Local results of this year’s count will contribute to local, provincial, and national understanding of homelessness and continue to inform DNSSAB’s work to prevent and reduce homelessness throughout the district.
