National School Bus Safety Week (Oct. 19-23) is underway, and city police are reminding drivers to prioritize student safety.
The North Bay Police Service says stop for the school bus every time.
– Stop when the bus’s red lights are flashing or its stop arm is activated.
· Drivers approaching from behind must stop at least 20 metres from the bus.
· Remain stopped until the bus moves, the red lights stop flashing and the stop arm is no longer activated.
· Amber lights mean the bus is preparing to stop. Slow down and prepare to stop. Never try to beat a school bus.
Police also say breaking the law has consequences, including fines and demerit points, while dangerous driving in school zones could also result in criminal charges.
They say:
– Drivers convicted of failing to stop for a school bus may face a total roadside fine of $490 and six demerit points.
– If the driver is convicted in court, the fine can increase to up to $2000 for a first offence and each subsequent offence within 5 years can go up to $4000 and include up to 6 months in jail
Motorists are also encouraged to report dangerous driving, which helps police identify problem areas and investigate dangerous driving involving school buses.
If you witness dangerous driving, note the vehicle’s licence plate, make, model, colour and a description of the driver, if safe to do so.
