CRA scam to dupe North Bay woman of $6,000 fails

A North Bay woman almost fell for the CRA con after two scammers teamed up to attempt to defraud her of $6,000.

Renee Grenon got a call from a man claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency saying she owed the taxman $6,000.

Grenon told Moose News the man, who had an East Indian sounding accent, wanted to know who had done her taxes.

Grenon said it was L.I.P.I.

Grenon then asked the fake CRA rep what she had to do to fix the situation.

“I’d like to rectify this situation right now,” Grenon told the caller.

“But he said it was too late because he’d already signed the paperwork and the RCMP were on their way to come and get me.”

As this conversation went on a second call came in and Grenon said it was a man claiming to be from L.I.P.I.

This man also had an East Indian accent and admitted the agency had made a mistake with her taxes and was looking to rectify the matter.

Grenon says the one-two punch made for a very convincing case and she admitted to being scared for what could happen to her.

However fortunately for the 39-year-old the fake CRA rep began to get vulgar and obscene over the phone.

That’s when she realized the call had to be a con.

Grenon didn’t hand over any money and told the North Bay police what she had experienced.

Although she didn’t become a victim, Grenon worries that some seniors and others could be conned from their money because of the scam’s slickness.
