OPP: Northern Ontario fugitive sightings ‘unsubstantiated’

Speculation that wanted men Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky are in northern Ontario has so far turned out to be just that — speculation.

The OPP is following up on social media rumours about two men in a suspicious vehicle, spotted in a construction zone near Kapuskasing, Ontario, at about 10:30am yesterday. Kapuskasing is approximately 500 kilometres north of North Bay.

Northeast region media coordinator and Acting Sergeant Shona Camirand said in the past week, provincial police have received dozens of calls related to the fugitive murder suspects from British Columbia. They were all unsubstantiated.

“We will investigate every incident that we get,” Camirand emphasized. “We will look for the vehicles in question or the people in question. Public safety is the OPP’s utmost concern and if there’s anything safety-wise that the public needs to know, we’ll get it out there.”

Yesterday, the RCAF withdrew from the air search for the fugitives, wanted by authorities in connection with three homicides earlier in July. The RCMP also announced it will scale back their search in northern Manitoba.

While the investigation continues by following leads in several parts of the country, Camirand asks anyone who spots anything suspicious not to report it on social media, but directly to the police.
