‘Wheels to the Water’ is late accessibility advocate’s dream come true

Perhaps it’s fitting that “Wheels to the Water” is located at Marathon Beach because bringing the idea to fruition was as gruelling as completing that test of endurance.

The late Adam “Wheels” Miller, frustrated by the barrier the beach sand presented to access the water by wheelchair, vowed to make the beach accessible to more segments of the population. Miller had made acquiring the beach accessibility mat for North Bay a goal but funding fell through and the project had stalled when he passed away in May of 2016.

The project originated with the Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee (MAAC), of which he was a member, and has finally come to fruition after being included in this year’s budget.

Just a short time after witnessing North Bay City Council honour their loved one, Miller’s family will be able to see for themselves the product of his hard work.

The City of North Bay has installed the mat and it will soon be officially named “Wheels to the Water” in honour of one of the initiative’s most staunch advocates.
