More sidewalks coming to North Bay

There will be new sidewalks built around the city in the coming years.

City council has approved a $929,000 contract for the design of new sidewalks around North Bay.

The contract is part of the city’s successful application to the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).

Two-thirds of the $929,000 contract will be covered by higher levels of government.

Over the next few years, the construction of the new sidewalks will cost over $9.8 million. Through the ICIP, the federal government will provide $3.5 million, the provincial government will supply over $2.9 million with the city paying the remaining $3.3 million.

The money has already been allocated in the city’s 10-year capital plan.

During the discussion, councillors thanked the higher levels of government for the support.

Deputy mayor Tanya Vrebosch warned council that maintenance of the sidewalks will have an added expense.

“We do have to look at the budget in future years,” she said.

Councillor Scott Robertson, who is a vocal advocate for active transportation, says North Bay’s sidewalk infrastructure needs improvement.

“I’m really glad to see we’re starting to address that,” he said, noting how Airport Road has no sidewalks despite the Kinsmen Trail letting out on the street.

Robertson added it’s a busy street with bus stops and sidewalks will make it safer.

The project will also cover the installation of storm and sewer, restoration, and partial asphalt paving.
