Design contract approved for bus station renos

City Council is moving forward on a project to renovate the North Bay Transit Station.

A $145,510 contract was awarded Tuesday to Planmac Engineering Inc. for the design work on the renovations which include upgrading the washrooms, landscaping work, HVAC repairs and shelter restoration.

During the council discussion, coun. Dave Mendicino welcomed the decision, saying “this is just another investment that we’re seeing in the downtown.”

Nearly three-quarters of the station renovations will be covered by the higher levels of government through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) Transit Stream. 50 percent of the cost will be paid by the federal government, with 23 percent coming from the province.

Coun. Chris Mayne, who also serves as the Chair of the Infrastructure and Operations Committee, says it’s good timing to do the “needed” renovations on the station.

“We always want something that’s going to be safe, secure, fully accessible and user-friendly,” he said.

Mayne says it’s the first major renovation that has taken place at the station since it opened on Oak Street over 10 years ago. He figures once the design work is complete, construction will begin this summer.
