Sign war hits North Bay

Falling in line with many other Ontario towns, it looks like we have ourselves a sign war in North Bay.

It began with Cecil’s Brewhouse, who posted a picture of their sign on the corner of McIntyre and Wyld streets Monday which read “who wants to have a sign war”.

The Facebook post then issued a challenge to nearly two dozen other businesses in the city to participate.

Chris Brown, who owns Flat Rate Towing, normally has witty signs in front of his business on the corner of Fisher and McIntyre Streets, is up for the challenge.

“We’re trying to make better of this situation with all this COVID-19 stuff,” he said, having already put out a sign in response to Cecil’s.

Maureen Brazeau, Owner of Rebuilt Resources, was quick to reply on Facebook saying her store also accepts the challenge.

“With this lockdown, people want something new and fun,” Brazeau said, adding she’s “up for suggestions” for what to put in the window of her store on Regina Street.

Dan Misturada, Executive Director of the Capitol Centre, says the topic was discussed at his weekly staff meeting Wednesday morning.

“It sounded like a lot of fun. I think a lot of us have struggled through the past year and a bit I think we just needed a positive distraction,” he said.

Sign wars have been popping up in communities across Canada in recent weeks, first beginning in April in Listowel, Ontario where a Speedy Glass auto shop challenged the Dairy Queen restaurant across the street to a sign war.

Since then, similar wars have been seen in many other Ontario towns.
