Virtual training exercise involving members at 22 Wing

Members of 22 Wing/CFB North Bay were recently helping war fighters prepare for combat situations.

An international simulated exercise took place from October 24th to November 5th.

Exercise Coalition Virtual Flag 22-1 was led by the United States Air Force and included forces from Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.

It was the fourth time the exercise was executed from 22 Wing.

Those involved with the virtual training had the opportunity to experience air, ground, maritime, space and cyber defence operations by using simulations and virtual technology.

“By utilizing simulations and virtual technology Aerospace Controllers and Aerospace Control Operators can exercise war-time battle management skills with coalition partners on a scale that would not be otherwise practical,” says Colonel Mark Lachapelle, 22 Wing and Canadian Air Defence Sector Commander.

“22 Wing provided personnel with the opportunity to exercise within a state-of-the-art command and control training centre, working alongside other members of the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Canadian Army, the United States Air Force, and the United States Marine Corps who made

up the Control and Reporting Centre,” says Major Shaun Hyland, Exercise and Event Management Coordinator, Royal Canadian Air Force Aerospace Warfare Centre.

Officials say that Exercise Coalition Virtual Flag is the largest and most complex virtual exercise in which the RCAF participates, providing far-reaching training opportunities on various simulation systems for training purposes.

The training vignettes are geared towards tactical unit objectives and the operational level.
